Colour, Colour and more Colour at the New York Fashion Week!

Sunny pops of colour, sultry citrine and sexy violet mashed up with muted sea tones on the runways in New York which were filled with flowers both literally and re-invented at the NY fashion week. Colour is practically everywhere this season, mixed with plenty of flounce and sheer peek-a-boos.

The reviews on few of the designer collections –

Jill Stuart – the key here was for it to be a dream, a fantasy! Where femininity came in soft, sherbet tones and many resort friendly silhouettes which were reminiscent of the early 1960’s mixed together with prints of palm trees and flying birds to give the feeling of the summery spring time. Colours used here are mint green, lipstick pink, tangerine and citrine yellow. The silhouettes used where dropped waists, culottes and pleated skirts. Even though they were girly, it wasn’t dowdy, prim and old fashioned.

Prabal Gurung – collection was dominated by soft purples with digitized flora, full skirts and pant cut tights. Where there are flowers there are also birds, look for the winged motif in light pinks, purples and whites. He created modern themed collection with floral prints, dropped waists and sharp shouldered jackets and skinny pants. His entire collection had a futuristic feel to it; he has lived up to the CFDA last year award for emerging talent. The collection is fresh and chic!

Cynthia Rowley– the outfits had spunk and Asian inspired tuxedo jackets with zigzag printed leggings. Rowley had got her personal interest etched into her designs with surfing; she paired embroidered swim trunks with an orange T which had leather sleeves. Metallic’s, leather and appliqués mashed the look together.

Rebecca Taylor – collection consisted of pretty and sexy outfits where the colours were so delectable, you could eat them up. She said she wanted to create something modern, ethereal and angelic. Digital print and snake leather (not real of course) consisted of the rest.

Luca Luca– Raul Melgoza loves flowers and for the latest collection turned to late American painter Georgia O’Keefe for inspiration. Florals where most prominent in the collection, particularly the rosettes which were present in bright colours for the spring line, as he really wanted to emphasize the sensuality and femininity of the female figure.

Adam Lippes – got his inspiration from his studio filled with prints of large flowers and polka-dots. He created classic tailored shapes like pantsuits and trench coats with lots of sheers, soft fabrics and feminine colours of the season.

Happy colours can be seen all over and everywhere. The pantones 10 shades for women for next year spring are – tangerine tango, solar power, sodalite blue, bellflower, margarita, cabaret, driftwood, sweet lilac, cockatoo and starfish. Looking forward to having a colourful spring 2012!

Snoop Dogg, Lil’ Wayne & Kanye West – Too Haute for Fashion

Haute fashion will be seen with a little more bling, little more glam and little more hip hop. When Snoop Dogg and Karl Lagerfeld collaborated in our midst, it was only a matter of time before we see hip hop music and glamour on the runways of the haute couture world.

Lagerfeld hooked up with Snoop Dogg in St. Tropez to film a scene for his latest music video, he (high profile fashion designer – Lagerfeld) was all decked out in white at the popular vacation spot while he was filming a scene for the hip hop legend new single, titled “St. Tropez”.

The other hip hop artists to have broached the haute couture fashion barriers are –

Lil’ Wayne revealed that the leopard print jeans which he had adorned to perform at the MTV VMA’s were actually women’s jeggings! This is the rage with all women as it is very versatile and baggy hip-hugging style by Tripp NYC and it is still available for sale.

Kanye West is another rapper who has the hots for women’s clothes and who is getting ready to launch his debut collection for New York Fashion Week. Kanye is in partnership with British designer Louise Goldin for the debut, where they are setting shop in Goldin’s London studio. The secretive launch will be held in NYC very soon.

The fashion world and the rap music world are crashing into each other and creating a whole lot of blinged out couture. This is one of the third notable intersection between rap and fashion. Soon to see many more artists rock the ‘Fashion World’!
