Herrera provides a tasteful treatment to florals

Another trend sprouting up at New York Fashion Week is florals, and no one so far has done them better than Carolina Herrera.

With Herrera’s tasteful treatment, though, there was naught ditzy, dated or dowdy on her runway Monday, even if the bold flowers themselves were enthused by botanical plates from the 18th century.

A crisp white blouse — something Herrera herself often wears to obtain her bow and this show was no dissimilar — was paired with a slim single-fold black pencil skirt with a daisy for daytime sophistication. A lotus-embroidered illusion blouse absolutely complemented a dramatic white ballskirt that featured a double Korean bow, her substitute for grosgrain ribbon this season.

The bow was like to the belt worn on traditional martial-arts ghis.

Herrera said, in fact, in her notes: “The cut and details of this collection were enthused by traditional clothes from Korea.

Some models wore black straw hats conventionally used by male farmers, and many also had their waists cinched by elaborate acetate belts.

The seed-packet motif on some looks unfocused from the beautiful prints and colors, as well as bold, bright lipstick shades of hot pink and red, but the bird-print folded dress with its slim, chic shape was a winner.

A total of 52 models took to the catwalk at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week tents, making an impactful, memorable finale.

Herrera’s well-heeled woman of course will have many choices for the new season, as well as the fabulous shoes by Manolo Blahnik done specially to match this collection.

Latest Topshop catwalk for London Fashion Week

The British high street chain, Topshop, will showcase emerging design flair at London Fashion Week for spring/summer 2010 in the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo station.

Topshop has given a effective ‘platform’ to emerging design talent by providing sponsorship for NEWGEN ( British fashion’s star newcomers) since 2001, and, for Fashion East, another initiative, since 2003. This season the platform will become a actuality as the Topshop shows discover a new home where the high-speed trains once whisked millions of passengers to and from Paris.

For this London Fashion Week, the cavernous space will be changed into a giant catwalk and presentation area, once again play host to foot-traffic – albeit of an altogether more exciting kind.

Fashion East’s 10th Anniversary show, on Tuesday, 21st September, will signal fashion’s departure, as models strut their substance in designs by Simone Rocha, Heikki Salonen and Felicity Brown.

Meanwhile, throughout London Fashion Week, the style fever will persist in Topshop’s Oxford Street, W1 store with a dedicated NEWGEN pop-up area and a photo-wall of ‘best-dressed customers’.
