Oscars 2010: stars shun fashion faux-pas as Zoe Saldana shines
Nothing to shriek at, or stare at in distrust, or make you double-up with helpless laughter. Or possibly they really got it right, because, for once, the Academy Awards “catwalk” was pretty much an exercise in dressing well for the occasion.
Zoe Saldana obtains my vote for the best-dressed of the night. She wore a stunning gown by young Riccardo Tisci, the inspired director at Givenchy, who was celebrating, after presenting his autumn/winter collection in Paris last night, at about the same time Zoe was receiving dressed in Hollywood.
She wore the stunning, “Natalia” gown, from his summer collection, strapless, chiffon, and shadow-dyed, from palest lilac, on the crystal-strewn bodice, behind to the deep violet of the bouffant hem.
Molly Ringwald wore a Grecian-style one-shouldered purple gown, and Mariah Carey, nearly wore her off-the-shoulder purple. Charlize Theron sparkled in lilac Christian Dior, with a rather curious “bra” detail on the bodice; and Elizabeth Banks in flowing lilac Versace.
The ‘ladies in red’ awards go to Vera Farmiga, in a strapless Marchesa, with a sculpted flow of ruffles; and Penelope Cruz, in a slightly flamenco Donna Karan.
Several required the safety of the BBD – the big black dress – among them, Carey Mulligan, in Prada, and, perhaps, not obviously, Hollywood’s favourite vampire-lover, Kristen Stewart, in Monique L’Huiller.
Maggie Gyllenhaal amazed in a vintage floral, hand-painted with cobalt brush-strokes; once again, red-hot off the catwalk from Van Noten’s show a few days ago in Paris.

Dries Van Noten autumn/winter 2010/11 collections
The historic Hotel de Ville (town hall) in Paris – site, since 1357, of the city’s administration, not to reveal an ensuing revolution or two and thousands of weddings – was the setting for two differing fashion forces.
On the opening day of the Paris pret-a-porter season for autumn/winter 2010/2011, the Belgian designer, Dries Van Noten, wedded military inspiration and 1940s/50s haute couture, in a collection that balanced accurately the right mix of masculine and feminine.
His models strode through the impressive, 19th century, gilded and cherub-infested “Salle des Fetes”, in an amazing combination of army-green cotton, paired with hand-painted, floral silk, which lightly referenced the “New Look” of Christian Dior in 1947. It might sound fantastic, but it was beautiful.
Multi-buckled “fatigue” trousers came with tailored jackets with nipped-in waists and richness over the hips, in grey cashmere; and black wool “cocoon” coats topped elastic-hemmed PT trousers.
Military shirts, in khaki, were worn with profligate, full, skirts just covering the knee, hand-painted in shocking pink and violet over floral prints, with rustling petticoats underneath.
Garbo-esque, hooded raincoats, tightly belted and actually functional, featured a nod to an extravagant military past, with Napoleonic sleeves, covered with silver embroidery.
Leopard-print presented a counterpoint to the military and floral theme, appearing as little scarves and belted waistcoats.

Designer fashion group Cruise in main re-launch
Glasgow-based designer fashion chain Cruise, which was enforced to shut three of its stores last year, has embarked on a main relaunch.
The group has also selected a new chief executive.
James Pow, who has worked at Mulberry, Aquascutum, and Pringle, said he intended to re-establish the retailer at the cutting edge of designer fashion.
Cruise, which has 10 UK stores, was acquired from administration by management last May.
Mr Pow has invested a six-figure sum in the business and is control the refurbishment of its seven flagship stores in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast and Newcastle.
He has also enrolled London-based fashion photographer Julia Kennedy – who has efforted with pop stars Mary J Blige and The Black Eyed Peas – to re-launch the retailer’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection.
He said: This is a very thrilling time for both the business and the brand. The business had become sluggish and was no longer breaking new ground. We’re determined to change that and ensure Cruise retains its rightful place at the extremely cutting edge of British retailing.
